Beginner’s Guide to Equestrian Gear

What You Need to Start Riding

Riding Helmet

Your helmet is your most important piece of gear. It protects your head in case of a fall, and nearly all riding schools and competitions require it. Make sure it's certified for equestrian use (not a bike or skate helmet).

What to look for:

  • Proper safety certification (ASTM/SEI or CE)
  • A snug but comfortable fit with a secure chin strap
  • Good ventilation to keep you cool in hot weather

Riding Apparel

You don’t need a full competition outfit to start, but you do need clothes that move with your body and won’t get caught on the saddle or gear.

Recommended basics:

  • A fitted riding shirt (sports tops or riding shirts)
  • Stretchy pants or breeches—avoid jeans or anything with thick seams
  • A lightweight riding jacket or training top designed to block UV rays and allow airflow

Gloves

Gloves protect your hands from friction caused by the reins and help you keep a steady grip—especially when your hands get sweaty or the reins get slippery.

Look for:

  • Snug fit with palm grip
  • Breathable, moisture-wicking material
  • Lightweight coverage ideal for tropical weather

Riding Boots

Footwear is a key safety item. Riding boots have a small heel to prevent your foot from slipping through the stirrup and a smooth sole for easy release.

Beginner-friendly options:

  • Tall boots – structured, classic style
  • Paddock boots – ankle-high, flexible and comfortable; pair with half chaps for added protection

Optional but Useful:

  • Half chaps – add grip and leg protection when using short boots
  • Riding socks – long, lightweight socks that fit comfortably under boots

Safety Jacket (Airbags)

An inflatable safety jacket is a vital piece of protective gear designed to minimize the risk of serious injury to the key areas like the neck, spine, and hips in the event of a fall from the horse.

Styles:

  • Vest Style – ideal for daily riding and warm climates
  • Jacket Style – more formal, suited for competitions but less popular in hot weather

Key Features:

  • Replaceable gas canisters
  • Secure lanyard system
  • Lightweight and fast inflation for immediate impact protection
